| A Brief Introduction of Beijing Genomics Institute
and its Forensic Center
The Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is one of the largest and leading DNA science research institutes in the world. Its accomplishments include: the International Human Genome Project and the International HapMap Project (representing China in those projects); the International Chicken, and International Pig Genome Projects; Rice, Silkworm Genome Projects conducted by ourselves, and etc; with a dozen major publications in the journals of Science and Nature. Our DNA analysis capacity exceeds 50 million bps per day. The institute has extensive expertise in conducting DNA identification analyses such as STR, mitochondria DNA, large scale SNP discovery and validation, and HLA typing.
The BGI Forensic Center is a major platform of the institute. There are more than 50 highly-qualified experts associated with the Forensic Center. The Forensic Center has been a pioneer in the application of DNA technology in forensic and human rights in China. Many world renowned Legal and Forensic experts, such as Drs. Henry Lee Mary-Clair King, and Douglass Wallace, are in the Advisory Board of the Center.
Our Forensic Center performed nearly a thousand DNA identification tests from various sample types such as tooth, bone, blood, hair, and including ancient samples for over 1000 years old. Its forensic work has been accredited by both the Department of Justice of China and China National Accreditation Board for Laboratories. Its automated, quality-assured, modern DNA identification system include equipment such as two sets of Applied Biosystems 3730 DNA Analyzers made by Applied Biosystems and 104 MegaBACE DNA Analyzers made by GE Healthcare. The entire system has a capacity for 4,500 STR tests and 100,000 sequencing tests per day. |
